They fled the war in Angola and settled at Omega, Namibia. When Namibia acquired independence in 1990, the South African Defence Force relocated members of the !Xun and Khwe communities to Schmidtsdrift in Northern Cape, South Africa. This is where Donna has matured into an exciting artist.
Donna mother says, ‘I am glad that my children are born in these times. Then people were hurt by wild things or sometimes got weak from drought. If a snake bit you in the bush while you were looking for food and the traditional doctor could not suck out the poison and help you, you died. Elephants were not so dangerous, but lions – they smell people and bite them.’
There are no longer wild animals about, yet the wild spirit is alive in Donna’s imagination and her paintings.
