Thama Kase was born in 1971 in the Ghanzi District, Botswana. As a young man, he joined the Art Project in 1992. His large swirling compositions and unusual colour combinations were met with great enthusiasm by most art lovers. He loves to combine known animals with ones that he has conjured up. These fantasy animals are often amusing and charming. He comments that these caricatures of animals stem from his childhood memories of hunting trips with his father. He says that for a small boy the animals he encountered were enormous and frightening. In his dreams they became the caricatures he now likes to depict.
He smiles and says, "Why do I always have to make the serious things? Why should I not make people laugh? Anyhow, I think people love the fun in my art". Thama loves to play the guitar but also has a great interest in his traditional music and dance. For him the traditional dances of the Bushmen are a great source of enjoyment and pride. He also has vivid childhood memories of hunting trips with his father and grandfather. He loves to paint on extremely large canvasses. The process of mono printing suits his specific style very well. His work often has unusual colour combinations, but he admits to be very fond of pure black and white. Like many of the other Bushmen artists, Thama's work has been exhibited worldwide. During 1999 he lost two of his children, but today has three kids to support.
