Rock Art > What is rock art?

Is it the reflection of the life of the San as they lived thousands of years ago, depicting hunting scenes, religious beliefs, commercial life, dancing and their everyday struggle to survive?

Until recently, most amateur and professional anthropologists looked at a painting and believed that they could decipher it without any problems. The pieces that they didn't understand were passed of as crude art or that the artist had too much to drink or smoke.

This has now found not to be the case, and their work is recognised as holding deep spiritual and religious meaning. The rock art represents one of the longest- enduring traditions of art-making known.
